Location: Rutland, Massachusetts

Style of Home: Antique (Early 1800s)

At Joshua Allen Design, we love the challenge of blending historic character with modern functionality, and our Deep & Moody Bathroom Retreat project in Rutland, Massachusetts, was no exception. This stunning transformation took an outdated space and turned it into a bold, luxurious escape—all while preserving the home’s rich 19th-century charm.

The Client’s Vision: A Bathroom with Bold Personality

When our clients came to us, they made one thing clear: their existing bathroom wasn't functioning well for them. Their goal was to create a completely new, full bath that included a shower while incorporating original architectural features—most notably, the antique fireplace. They gravitated toward a moody and bold aesthetic, striking metal finishes, and classic touches that would make the space feel both dramatic and timeless.

Their must-have list included:

  • A deep soaking tub—a non-negotiable element for their retreat.

  • A standing shower with dual shower heads for a spa-like experience.

  • Preservation of the fireplace, ensuring it remained a focal point of the space.

Designing a Bold & Functional Space

One of the most exciting aspects of this project was the ability to fit so many functional and aesthetic elements into a relatively small footprint. It’s not every day that we get to include a grand soaking tub, a two-head standing shower, a 30-inch vanity, and a fireplace in one cohesive design!

Our approach was to carefully balance dramatic design with functionality. The custom vanity and fireplace surround became an integral part of this vision. We designed this piece of custom cabinetry to seamlessly integrate with the historical architecture while offering modern convenience. The wallpaper selection was another standout—its rich tones complemented the home’s historic character while adding a contemporary flair.

Overcoming Design Challenges

Every renovation has its challenges, and this project was no exception. The first major hurdle was working around the fireplace while ensuring we had enough space for the shower, all while adhering to state building codes. Through creative planning, we successfully maintained the fireplace’s charm without compromising usability.

Another challenge? Finding the perfect placement for the deep soaking tub. Space was limited, but by modifying the door swing, we discovered an ideal spot adjacent to the entryway, creating a natural flow within the room without sacrificing the client’s wish list.

Final Thoughts: A Space with Lasting Impact

This project is one of our favorites to date—not only because of its unique challenges but because of its personality-packed result. Every inch of the space tells a story, blending bold choices with historic beauty. It’s rare to find clients who are willing to fully embrace such a daring and deep aesthetic, and we’re grateful to have been part of bringing their vision to life.

Our clients are absolutely thrilled with their new full bathroom retreat, and so are we. This is a project we’ll be showcasing for a long time, proving that even in a historic home, modern luxuries and bold design can coexist beautifully.
